おおきに ookini

Thanks / Hello (Kansai) Standard: ありがとう (arigatou)

The quintessential Osaka word. Used for "thanks" but also as a friendly greeting in shops. You'll hear this constantly in Osaka.

せやな seyana

That's right / Yeah Standard: そうだね (sou da ne)

The Osaka "yeah". You'll hear this in every conversation. Variations: せやねん (seya nen) for emphasis.

あかん akan

No good / Can't / Don't! Standard: だめ (dame) / いけない (ikenai)

Osaka's versatile "no". "Akan akan!" (あかんあかん) is emphatic. "Akankatta" (あかんかった) = "It was no good".

ほんま？ honma?

Really? Standard: ほんとう？ (hontou?)

ほんまに (honma ni) = really/truly. One of the most common Kansai words. Use it constantly!

ちゃう chau

No / Wrong / Different Standard: 違う (chigau)

ちゃうちゃう (chau chau) = no no. The famous tongue twister: ちゃうちゃうちゃう？(Is that a Chow Chow dog?) ちゃうちゃう (No, it isn't).

〜やねん ~ya nen

It is~ / That's because~ Standard: 〜なんだ (~nan da)

Adds explanation/emphasis. そうやねん (sou ya nen) = "That's right!" / "Exactly!"

〜へん ~hen

Not~ (negative) Standard: 〜ない (~nai)

わからへん (wakara hen) = don't understand. できへん (deki hen) = can't do. Very common!

なんぼ？ nanbo?

How much? Standard: いくら？ (ikura?)

Classic Osaka merchant word. なんぼでもええで (nanbo demo ee de) = Any amount is fine / Take as much as you want.

おもろい omoroi

Funny / Interesting Standard: おもしろい (omoshiroi)

High praise in Osaka! おもろいやん！(omoroi yan!) = That's hilarious! Osakans love humor.

しゃあない shaanai

It can't be helped Standard: しょうがない (shouganai)

Philosophical acceptance. When something goes wrong: まあ、しゃあないな (maa, shaanai na) = Well, nothing to be done.

ええ ee

Good / Fine / Yes Standard: いい (ii)

ええやん (ee yan) = That's good! ええで (ee de) = It's fine/okay. ええ感じ (ee kanji) = Good feeling/looking good.

Grammar Differences

Negative Form: ～へん (~hen) instead of ～ない (~nai)

Copula: や (ya) instead of だ (da)

Emphasis: ～ねん (~nen)

Adds explanation or emphasis at end of sentences.

行くねん (iku nen) = I'm going (explanation)
好きやねん (suki ya nen) = I like it (emphasis)
知らんねん (shiran nen) = I don't know (casual)

Kansai Intonation

Even with standard words, Kansai has different pitch accents. The melody is more varied than Tokyo Japanese.

Tip: Listen to Kansai comedians (manzai) on YouTube. The rhythm and intonation will stick in your head!

Regional Variations

Kansai-ben varies by city:

Osaka-ben — Most famous, merchant culture, direct
Kyoto-ben — Softer, more elegant, ～はる (haru) honorific
Kobe-ben — Mix of Osaka and unique terms like とう (tou) for です
